Google Voice

   Go here to make an account: http://www.google.com/voice (I'd recommend making a separate google account than you'd use for Gmail or other things, unless you don't mind having all of your stuff connected.

After you have a number and stuff, you can use this program to text/call from your desktop: http://www.daveamenta.com/products/gvnotifier/

You'll also need a softphone, for the calling itself, for which I recommend Xlite: http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite.html

And you'll need a different phone number to actually route the calls through. Gizmo is not currently usable, so, I'd recommend SipGate Private (meaning free for a single person, i.e. not a business): https://secure.sipgate.com/register/private

any chance you could use this on an app-friendly phone (the google-voice app is already out!)

So, after I get an apartment, I could use this to have a house phone without actually paying for anything?

Seems a possibility, though that link does go on to state its an "experimental service" and calls are limited to 20 minutes.

that'd be perfect for me (most of my calls last less than 20 seconds let alone 20 minutes! )
