Emulysian Fields is proud to announce the launch of two new sections of EF:
SavePoint, which isn't a new section per se, but a retooling of an old one. SavePoint is EF's personal torrent-tracker. It's invite only, so, ask around if you're interested!
IdeaCloud, for people to launch great ideas, with a little help from someone who is already waist-deep in web stuff. I'm willing to help launch the idea with design, scripting, coding, whatever it takes. I was inspired to do this because EF wouldn't have gotten anywhere without little nudges here and there, and help from its host, Stroh, and its members.
It is not often that I post front page news. With that in mind, please see that this instance is no different. I offer you no news. However, I have some olds.
The Pirate Bay only offers Magnet links now, and Mininova only offers content distributed from users they certify as legal. Demonoid is currently down due to a glitch, and isoHunt has finally been forced into litigation (in Canada).
As a computer (and thus part of the internet), I would just like to say that no law or precedent will stop people from file sharing. They will continue to share through new programs and protocols, or in the same programs and protocols through different ways, through new loopholes in technical legal jargon, or through old loopholes that have not been closed, or against the law in whatever country they may be breaking the authoritarian laws in, ad infinitum.
The capitalistic mindset that the greedy people who feel they are being infringed upon is archaic. We are in an age of new technology, free thinking, sharing, and new ideas. No matter what you do, people will continue to share files. Even if it's physically copying the discs a friend has, or renting things and copying them.
As far as reasoning, think of it like a sandwich. You are selling a sandwich. I don't have money for a sandwich. If I took that sandwich from you, you would be angry, and with reason. If I copied that sandwich from you without your knowledge, we'd both have sandwiches, and we'd both be happy. And guess what? You lost nothing. Because I wasn't going to buy that sandwich anyhow. If I was able to, and was going to, knowing I could have it for free wouldn't change that. And it wouldn't change the minds of most people. All this changes is what I have, and how happy I am. And one more thing. Before, I couldn't afford your sandwich. But now, I've had it. And it was delicious. And if anyone else is hungry, or is asking around about sandwiches, guess where I'll point them. Some of them may be from the same crowd as me. Unable to afford the sandwich, willing to copy it. But most of them, I promise you, are going to buy your sandwich. You have only gained from my copying. And like I said, you couldn't stop the copying ever, without executing people who copy.
And if your goal is to have a populace of boring gray sheep who all work all their lives to pay for things they need to preserve their lives and pursue happiness in them, then executing anyone different is the only course of action.
Don't do that, it's narrow-minded and stupid. So, stop being greedy, and see these things for what they really are. And stop wasting money litigating against these things. I almost hope that file sharing stops for a short while, just so you can watch that the only money you're not losing is what you've been spending on litigation.
I'm fully aware I fall under staff, but at least I had a decent excuse. Though active members should be aware by now that is no longer true. I have a steady net connection again, which means I can get back to doing my "work" around here...if you can even call it work.
As for what's actually going on around EF, there are various project and ideas moving around right now. I myself intend to try and breathe some more activity into the site, now that I'm back. Making new threads, keeping current ones going, trying to promote the site etc. Maybe even convince The Damnable One to bring Elysia back up, but we'll see on that. I may just end up having the members play some other MMO.
Speaking of Fid, he's been working diligently on the behind-the-scenes work of EF lately, so giving him some praise would probably make him feel good and even more motivated. Give credit where credit is due and such.
Moving away form EF news, I've been informed NASA intends to blow up the moon. Yeah...and I'm not even kidding here, you can go google that shit. If there is aliens living deep within the moon...they're probably going to be pissed after this stunt, I mean leaving all that garbage up there was bad enough, now we wanna wreck that shit up.
Well...anyway, think of it what you will. I just find it goddamn funny. Props go to Sy though for informing me about it.
Oh and the last bit I have to say here; Halloween. Will we have a surprise treat in store for you or is this just a trick? Stay tuned and find out. But while you wait, maybe you should go post up some spooky stuff or tell us the shenanigans you have planned for The Night of Scares.
That's it for me, this is enough of an update to satisfy me, but other staff can feel free to get off their lazy asses and say there part.
Fixed up your post a bit, Kaze. Since the last update, there's been stuff a brewing in the Wii board. So take a gander sometime. Can't think of much else to report EFwise. As for me, I'm being evicted next Tuesday, so there's a good chance I'll stop being around starting then due to being essentially screwed. Will be keeping people posted at SSOT. That's my piece, I assume someone else will edit this to add stuff as well.
Systemeth used BATON PASS!
Grimmy sent out Mopquill!
I call Sy being back within the week, from a friend's house or something, which will be temporary until he finds a way to do something with his own place. Either way, good luck, Sy.
Thank ye, Fiddy.
And, I have quite a few updates planned, both for the site and for ads, so, we should be seeing not only some traffic increases soon, but possibly some increases in site income (from nothing), to the point where maybe I can improve the site.
So, nothing is really new. I'm poor, my living situation is awful, EF still hasn't made money since AdSense dropped us, and I'm a sad panda.
My cell phone is currently off, as I'm broke. Normally, that wouldn't be such a big deal, as I've discovered Google Voice, thanks to Ace. However, I applied for new ads with Ads4Dough, hoping they can muster more than the minuscule amount of money Project Wonderful has been, and I was denied due to them being unable to reach me.
On top of that, we've been having less traffic and posts lately. While I've been optimizing the site for performance (so it hopefully loads much faster), I'm far too depressed and unmotivated to make a bunch of topics to talk about stuff.
In other news, we'll be moving to a server Stroh is having built once it's done being built (we're currently on a temp server). After that, we shouldn't have to move ever again at all.
My computer business is very slow, and any other business I'd be involved in like web design or hosting is non-existent. After I finish resolving EF's potential performance problems, and later move to the new server, I think I'll be focusing on real-life issues like getting work and finding our own place (many of you probably know our current living situation, which is, to say the least, not good). Also, you should all know, the server is being a bit slow lately, so, it's not just the website itself.
On the brighter side of things, I prettied up my directory indices (Fuck you Firefox, it is so a word!), so they look all fancy now. Also, Firefox made a leap from 3.0.12 or 13 to 3.5.2, so, you guys may want to update as well, if you haven't already. It seems generally more stable, but, for some reason seems to be laggier on scrolling, not updating certain parts of the screen as quickly as others.
This post brought to you at the behest of Kaze, who said we needed a new front page post. Woo.
